0270 - Mais postes na "avenida" / More posts in the "avenue"

Mais dois grandes buracos de poste aparecerem no limite do corte calcolítico no geológico da área central,  junto aos dois identificados nas campanhas anteriores. Parecem ter uma equidestância regular (cerca de 80 cm).

Two other large post holes were identified in the edge of the Chalcolithic cut in the geologic at the central area. They are close to the two identified in previous campaigns. They seem to be equidistant  (about 80cm).

Mas quando se escavavam os os novos outro apareceu, com a mesma equidistância. A "avenida" de buracos de poste está cada vez mais interessante.

But when we were excavating the new ones another one appeared, with the same equidistant. The "avenue" of post holes is getting more interesting.

0269 - Trabalho nocturno / Night work

Este foi o nosso trabalho nocturno de ontem. A maior covinha tem três traços associados formando uma espécie de cauda. Faz lembrar algumas representações que podem ser interpretadas como cometas, caso do fragmento dos Perdigões (que até pontos internos para sugerir o brilhar), de alguns motivos das pinturas de Pala Pinta (estudadas por Paulo Lima) e da mais inequívoca representação do cometa Haley na tapeçaria de Bayeux. Já foi sugerido que alguns destes conjuntos de covinhas podem representar partes do firmamento. A possibilidade de neste caso se representar um cometa pode ser tudo, menos descabida.

This was our work from last night. The bigger cup mark has three lines forming a conic shape, like a tale. It remembers some representations that might be interpreted  as comets. That is the case of the fragment of Perdigões (the internal dots suggesting bright), of some motives of Pala Pinta paintings (studied by Paulo Lima) and the unquestionable representation of Haley comet in Bayeux tapestry. It has been suggested that some of these cup marks assemblages might represent parts of the firmament. The possibility of this situation represent a comet may be everything but misplaced.

0268 - "Cidadão" Campaniforme / Citizen Beaker

Hoje surgiu mais um "cidadão" campaniforme, a fazer fé no recente retorno ao início do século XX promovido pelos geneticistas (não confundir com os dados proporcionados pelo aDNA).

Today another citizen Beaker appeared, believing in the recent return to the beginning of the XX century promoted by the geneticists (not to be confused with the aDNA data).

0267 - Ossos e buracos de poste / Bones and post holes

A escavação no Sepulcro 4 continua e aproxima-se do final. A dispersão de ossos desarticulados continua.

The excavation of Tomb 4 continues and gets closer to the end. Disarticulated scattered bones continue to appear.

Na área central continuamos a escavar a envolvente da Fossa 40 (a estrutura de deposição de restos humanos cremados). Ao longo dos limites do corte do geológico que envolve esta estrutura vários grandes buracos de poste estão a aparecer, sugerindo a existência de uma estrutura de madeira eventualmente associada à fossa. Já foram identificados 5.

At the central area we are excavating the surroundings of Pit 40 (the structure of the depositions of cremated human remains). Along the edge of the cut in the geologic that involves this structure several large post holes are appearing, suggesting some sort of wood structure possibly associated to the funerary pit. We already identified 5.

0266 - Ao 3º dia / At the 3rd day

E continuamos a escavação do Sepulcro 4. Entre outras coisas, apareceu um crânio separado em duas partes e com uma disposição particular e aparentemente intencionada.

And we continue the excavation of Tomb 4. Among other things, a skull separated in two parts appeared, with a specific deposition apparently intentional.  

0265 - Around pit 40 / À volta da fossa 40

Começamos a escavação na zona central dos recintos, junto à Fossa 40, na área de deposições de restos humanos cremados. Alguns desses restos já voltaram a aparecer em torno à fossa.

We started the excavation in the central area of the enclosures, next to pit 40, where the depositions of human cremated remains were done. Some of them have already appeared around the pit.

Mas o mais interessante foi o aparecimento de fragmentos cerâmicos decorados entre as pedras que envolvem a cista que se situa ao lado da Fossa 40 e que são do mesmo recipiente que há já alguns anos foi recolhido na base da estratigrafia da referida fossa.

But more interesting was the appearing of decorated pottery shards between the stones that surround the cist that is next to Pit 40. They are from the same pot that, some years ago, was recovered in the base of that pit.

0264 - Back for the second phase of 2018 campaign

Na próxima segunda feira estaremos de volta aos Perdigões, para a segunda fase da campanha de 2018. Iremos terminar a escavação do sepulcro 4 (que iniciámos na primeira fase) e dar continuidade às intervenções na área central, retomando a escavação de contextos neolíticos e calcolíticos, com destaque para os depósitos que integram restos humaos cremados. Como já é hábito, o evoluir da escavação poderá ser acompanhado aqui, através das informações diárias. Quem sabe, talvez apareçam mais destas notáveis figurinhas.

Next Monday we will be back to Perdigões, for the second phase of 2018 campaign. We will finish the excavation of tomb 4 (initiated in the first phase) and continue the intervention in the central area, excavating Neolithic and Chalcolithic contexts, particularly the deposits with cremated human remains. As usually, the development of the excavations may be followed here, through the daily posts.Who knows, maybe some more of these fantastic figurines will appear.

0263 - Filming at Perdigões / Filmagens nos Perdigões

Hoje, a equipa que realiza o programa Arqueomanía da TVE esteve em Reguengos, a filmar os Perdigões, o museu da Torre do Esporão (exposição sobre os Perdigões) e o depósito de materiais arqueológicos. No contexto de um documentário sobre megalitismo que estão a preparar. (Esta visita teve o apoio da DRCAlentejo, Era Arqueologia e Esporão).

Today, the team from the TVE show Arqueomanía was in Reguengos, to film Perdigões, de Torre do Esporão Museum (exhibition about Perdigões) and the deposit of archaeological materials. This was in the context of a documentary they are preparing about megalithism. (The visit had the support of DRCAlentejo, Era Arqueologia and Esporão).

0262 - Addressing the tomb 4 bones

Entre as fases de escavação do sepulcro 4, algum trabalho de laboratório. A Marina Lourenço esteve a remontar crânios e a preparar os dentes para a análise isotópica.

Between the phases of excavation of tomb 4, some lab work. Marina Lourenço was remounting some of the skulls and preparing the teeth for isotopic analysis.

0261 - Colors / Cores

Today was the last they of this first phase of 2018 campaign at Perdigões. We didn’t finish the excavation of tomb 4. Under the deposition of human remains there is another layer that get thicker at the back of the chamber and that has also human depositions. We will excavate it in next July.

Hoje foi o ultimo dia desta primeira fase da campanha de 2018 nos Perdigões. Não concluímos a escavação do Sepulcro 4. Sob a deposição de restos humanos existe um outro nível progressivamente mais espesso para a parte de trás da câmara, que também revela deposições humanas. Vamos escavá-lo em Julho.

But an interesting thing was noticed at this last day.  The base of the internal wall of the tholos is made of gabbro stones. This seems to be so in all the preserved perimeter of the wall, except in a place where there is a diorite stone. The darkness of the diorite makes a remarkable contrast with the whiteness of the gabbro stones, and it is precisely at North. This specific and punctual use of a different and contrasting raw material can hardly be by chance. And it is accordingly to the use of different raw materials, that provide different colors and textures, in the European megalithism, as forms communicating, marking, or expressing dichotomies or dualities. A line of research that has been developed for some years now, and it is also reaching Iberia.

Mas algo de interessante foi registado. A base da parede interna do tholos é feita de pedras de gabro. Parece ser assim em todo o perímetro conservado da parede, excepto num ponto específico, onde se encontra uma pedra de diorito. O escuro do diorito cria um contraste notável com a brancura dos gabros e está precisamente a Norte. Este específico e pontual recurso a uma diferente e contrastante matéria prima dificilmente pode ser entendido como casual. E está de acordo com o uso de matérias primas distintas, que proporcionam cores e texturas diferentes, no megalitismo Europeu, como forma de comunicação, de marcação ou de expressão de dicotomias ou dualidades. Uma linha de investigação que tem vindo a ser desenvolvida há alguns anos e que também está a chegar à Península Ibérica.

0260 - The debate / O debate

Today Ricardo was removing a skull. The skull was complete, but with cracks, so the base (that was up) came out first. Surprisingly, the inside of the skull was full of hand bones, namely phalanx.

Hoje o Ricardo estava a remover um crânio. O crânio estava completo, mas fissurado, por isso a base (virada para cima, saiu primeiro. Surpreendentemente, o interior do crânio estava repleto de ossos de mão, nomeadamente de falanges.

You can imagine the debate about the nature of the formation of this situation. Ultimately, we all came out alive.

Podem imaginar o debate sobre a natureza da formação desta situação. No fim, contudo, todos saímos vivos.

0257 - Experiment / Experiência

Steve is conducting an experiment at Perdigões. Using pit 50, that we excavated last year, to cow bones were buried, one with cinnabar spread on it, the other painted with a mixture of cinnabar and egg yolk. They will stay there for a couple of years and then excavated, recovered and analysed. The goal is to control diagenetic interference in the absorption of mercury in the bones and get a better idea of what happened to human bones that have high percentages of mercury.

O Steve está a conduzir uma experiência nos Perdigões. A Fossa 50, escavada no ano passado, está a ser usada para enterrar ossos de bovídeo, um coberto com cinábrio e o outro pintado com uma mistura de cinábrio e gema de ovo. Vão ali ficar um par de anos e depois escavados, recuperados e analisados. O objectivo é controlar os processos diagenéticos e a sua interferência na absorção de mercúrio nos ossos e compreender melhor o que aconteceu com os ossos humanos que apresentam elevadas percentagens de mercúrio.

0256 - Day 26 / Dia 26

These two objects suggest that we are in face of a reutilization of the tholos in the end of the 3rd Millennium BC, in the transition to / Early Bronze Age.  Will see what the radiocarbon dates say.

Estes dois objectos sugerem que estamos perante a reutilização do tholos no fim do 3º milénio AC, na transição para / início da Idade do Bronze.  Veremos o que dizem as datações de radiocarbon.

0255 - Day 25 / Dia 25

Yesterday we finished the definition of the bone depositions.

Ontem terminámos a definição das deposições de ossos.

Today we started to collect the bones.

Hoje começámos a levantar ossos.

A slow and hard task, having to coordinate every bone and excavate in difficult positions.

0254 - Day 23 / Dia 23

Finally, a mandible with teeth for Sr analysis in the context of the project on mobility of individuals at Perdigões.

Finalmente uma mandíbula com dentes para análise de Estrôncio no âmbito do projecto de mobilidade dos indivíduos nos Perdigões.

 And today we removed the section of the inner tumulus. Under there was another deposition of human bones, detached from the northern concentration. It is now clear that the tumulus was posterior to these depositions. How posterior we don’t know.

E hoje removemos a banqueta do tumulus interno. Sob a mesma, uma outra deposição de ossos humanos separada da concentração a norte. É agora claro que o tumulus é posterior a estas deposições. Quanto posterior não sabemos.

0253 - Day 22 / Dia 22

We have finally got to a horizontal layer, that seems to correspond to the base of the inner tumulus. The northern depositions of human remains starts to be delimited and seems to be overlapping this layer.

 Finalmente chegámos a um depósito horizontalizado, que parece corresponder à base do tumulus interno. As deposições humanas do quadrante norte também começam a estar delimitas, sobrepondo-se aparentemente a este nível.

 But because nothing is simple, a clay structure (?) started to appear.

Mas porque nada é simples, uma estrutura (?) em argila começou a aparecer.

 And is becoming odd. But the plan and the steps of the inner chamber are clear now.

E está a tornar-se estranha. Mas a planta e os degraus da câmara interna são agora claros.

0250 - An interesting day / Um dia interessante

Today we proceeded, and beneath a layer of clay another partial layer of stones appeared with the same angle.  The excavation of the entrance of the inner tumulus revealed two steps excavated in the bedrock.

Hoje continuámos a escavação e, por baixo de uma camada de argila, outro nível parcial de pedras apareceu, mantendo a mesma pendente. A escavação da entrada do tumulus interno revelou dois degraus escavados no geológico.

It is now clear that the human bone depositions in the middle of stones is in the middle of the construction of the tumulus, for it is covered by some of its layers and is overlapping others.

É agora claro que as deposições de ossos humanos entre pedras ocorrem no meio da construção do tumulus, pois está sob alguns dos seus níveis.
