0300 - Um clássico / A classic

Este foi o último dia de escavações da primeira fase da campanha deste ano nos Perdigões. Voltamos dentro de três semanas.
E como de costume, no último dia aparece sempre algo de interessante que não se pode continuar. Neste caso uma fossa, sob depósitos e a estrutura pétrea do final do 3º milénio, que apresenta em corte um recipiente aparentemente inteiro.

Today was the last day of excavations of the first phase of this year campaign at Perdigões. We will be back in three weeks.
And as usual, in the last day something interesting appears that we cannot continue. In this case it was a pit, under deposits and the stone structure of the late 3rd millennium, that presents an apparently complete pot in the section.

0299 - Estruturas / Structures

No extremo Este da estrutura do Ambiente 1, que engloba pelo menos uma cista, define-se um grande dormente de mó cravado na vertical. Por trás depósitos essencialmente de restos de cremações sobre as pedras. Pela frente essencialmente alguns ossos humanos dispersos não queimados.

In the Eastern side of Environment 1, which integrates at least one cist, a large grinding stone was put in a vertical position. Behind there are mainly depositions of cremated remains over the stones. In front, there are mainly dispersed human bones not burned.

E a sequência de grandes buracos de poste continua. Parece agora que é anterior à Fossa 40 dos cremados.

And the sequence of large post holes continues. It looks like that it is earlier than Pit 40of the cremated remains.

0298 - Recipientes / Recipients

Grandes vasos recolhidos na fossa com restos de cremações humanas. Provavelmente utilizados no seu transporte para a deposição nas vizinhas fossas 16 ou 40.

Large recipients collected in the pit with human cremated remains. Possibly used in their transportation and secondary deposition in the neighboring pits 16 and 40.

E o recipiente campaniforme agora com o perfil completo: uma caçoila ombreada.

And the bell beaker pot now with the complete profile:  a shouldered bowl. 

0297 - Dos depósitos tardios / From the latest deposits

Taça de fundo aplanado registada nos depósitos tardios, em que ocorrem igualmente cerâmicas campaniformes.

0296 - Nova fossa com cremações / New pit with cremations

Entre a Fossa 16 e a Fossa 40, ambas contendo deposições de restos humanos cremados (NMI de 9 na primeira e 240 na segunda) surgiu agora mais outra também com restos humanos cremados. De menores dimensões, está escavada nos depósitos de enchimento de um prévio fosso neolítico (Fosso 12).

No seu interior foram depositados, para além de alguns restos humanos cremados e três pontas de seta igualmente queimadas, fragmentos de dois grande recipientes, muito possivelmente utilizados no transporte dos restos cremados. Num dos casos, os fragmentos estavam sobrepostos em sequência, como se tivessem sido colocados em pilha e resvalado.

O número de contextos relacionados com as deposições de cremações aumenta nesta área central dos Perdigões.

Between Pit 16 and Pit 40, both containing depositions of cremated human remains (MNI of 9 in the first and of 240 in the second), appeared another pit also with cremated human remains. Smaller than the others, it was excavated in the fillings of a previous Neolithic ditch (Ditch 12).

Inside, apart from some cremated human remains and three arrow heads also burned, fragments of two large pots were deposited. These pots were most probably used in the transportation of the cremated remains. In one of the cases the fragments were deposited as a pile and slide.

The number of contexts related to depositions of cremated human remains in the central area of Perdigões is increasing.

0295 - Cistas / Cists

A área central dos Perdigões é extraordinariamente complexa, com cortes e sobreposições de estruturas que vão desde o final do Neolítico Médio até à transição para a Idade do Bronze, no final do 3º milénio AC.

Aqui vemos a cista que estava integrada no Ambiente 1, onde, após o encerramento da Fossa 40 (fossa com restos de cremações de pelo menos 240 indivíduos), se depositaram em área aberta restos de cremações de perto de 100 indivíduos. Esta cista, tal como o ambiente que integrava, assenta sobre depósitos que cobrem o "henge" central dos Perdigões identificado o ano passado.

The central area of Perdigões is extremely complex, with cuttings and overlapping of structures from the late Middle Neolithic until the transition to the Bronze Age, by the end of the 3rd millennium BC.

Here we can see the cist that integrates the Environment 1, where, after the closing of Pit 40 (a pit with the deposition of cremated remains of at least 240 individuals), cremated remains of about 100 individuals were deposited. This cist, as the environment it integrates, rest over deposits that cover the central "henge" of Perdigões, identified last year.

Mas junto à primeira cista outra parece estar a aparecer, sobreposta por depósitos e uma mega estrutura pétrea que se enquadra já no último quartel do 3º milénio AC.

But close to the first cist another one seems to be appearing, overlapped by deposits and a large stone structure dated already from the last quarter of the 3rd millennium BC.

0294 - Continunado.../Going on...

0293 - Punções / Awls

0292 - Visitas / Visitors

Um grupo de alemães, membros de uma associação de Arqueologia, veio em visita a sítios arqueológicos da Península Ibérica. Em Portugal, os Perdigões foram um dos eleitos. Visita às escavações, ao museu e ao gabinete de trabalho na Torre do Esporão.

A group of Germans, members of an archaeological association, came to visit archaeological sites in Iberia. In Portugal, Perdigões were one of the elected sites. They visit the excavations, the museum and the working office at Esporão tower.

0291 - Vasos / Pots

Ainda nas deposições de restos de cremações mais um vaso de mármore

Again in the depositions of cremated remains: another marble pot.

E um novo campaniforme, com uma decoração fora do comum: triângulos feitos por linhas a pontilhado delimitadas por linhas de pontos em zigzag.

And a new bell beaker, with an unusual decoration: triangular sequences of "pontilhado" delimited by zigzag lines of dotes.  

0290 - O campaniforme / The Bell Beaker

Uma das coisas interessantes é a falta da base, onde o recipiente revela um corte circular, sugerindo que a mesma foi intencionalmente removida. Um tipo diferente de fragmentação. A análise microscópica é agora necessária para confirmar a interpretação. Mas uma Arqueologia Interpretativa obriga a uma atenção ao detalhe.

One of the interesting things is the missing base. The recipient shows a circular cut in the base, suggesting that it was intentionally removed. Another type of fragmentation. Microscopic analyses are now needed to confirm the interpretation. But an Interpretative Archaeology needs attention to detail.

That apart, the recipient was treated with special care.

0289 - Estranha faca / Strange dagger

Uma faca ou punhal em cobre apareceu junto ao aglomerado de pedras que envolve a cista do Ambiente 1, sobre as quais se depositaram em espaço aberto restos de cremações humanas. Foi nesta mesma zona, um pouco mais acima, que também apareceu a mais famosa figurinha antropomórfica dos Perdigões.
Quanto à faca ou punhal apresenta uma curvatura pouco comum.

A knife or a dagger in copper appeared next to the stones that surround the cist of Environment 1, over which cremated human remains were spread in open area. It was in this same area, but a bit upper, that the most famous anthropomorphic figurine of Perdigões also appeared.
As to the knife or dagger it has a uncommon curvature.  

0288 - De volta para a campanha de 2019

A equipa da Era está de volta aos Perdigões para a campanha de 2019. Este ano vamos centrar-nos na área central, em torno aos contextos de deposições de restos de cremações, "henge" central e depósitos e estruturas mais tardios dos Perdigões. Avançar na compreensão de uma das áreas mais complexas do sítio.

Era team is back at Perdigões for the 2019 campaign. This year we will focus in the central area, in the contexts with depositions of cremated remains, the central henge and later deposits and structures of Perdigões. Moving in the comprehension of one of the most complex areas of the site. 

0287 - Visto do céu / Seen from the sky

A complexidade da área central dos Perdigões vista do céu. As várias estruturas visíveis repartem-se por cerca de 1500 anos, genericamente entre 3500 e 2000 a.C. E assim termina a campanha de 2018.

The complexity of the central area of Perdigões seen from the sky. The several visible structure cover about 1500 years, generically between 3500 and 2000 BC. And so it ends the 2018 campaign.

0286 - Omphalos

Os Perdigões são um anfiteatro natural, localizado no centro de uma concentricidade geológica e assumindo uma centralidade agregadora de comunidades da segunda metade do 4º e 3º milénio a.C.. Essa noção de centralidade manifesta-se no próprio sítio, através de um conjunto de complexas estruturas monumentais em madeira localizadas no centro do sítio e das quais esta campanha começou a dar conta. Aqui ficam duas imagens de perspectivas opostas do final da escavação (amanhã já só há registo).

Perdigões are a natural theater, located in the center of a geological concentric area and assuming a aggregation centrality regarding the communities of the 4th and 3rd millennium BC. The notion of centrality can be perceived in the site itself, through an assemblage of complex and monumental wood structures in the central area of the enclosures, that this campaign started to give notice. Here are to opposed perspectives of the end of the excavation (tomorrow we will be just recording). 

O qual começou já hoje, com a deslocação do José Pedro, do departamento de desenho da Era, para fazer o levantamento da área global do Sector Q e Sepulcro 4 com recurso a drone.

That started today, with the presence of José Pedro, from ERA's drawing department, to recording the global area of Sector Q and Tomb 4 with using a drone.

0285 - Cakes and post holes / Bolos e Buracos de poste

Hoje tivemos a terceira visita de jovens / crianças de Reguengos de Monsaraz às escavações dos Perdigões (foi o 4º dia aberto). No total, fomos visitados por cerca de 100 jovens. Foi o dia dos mais pequeninos. E eles fizeram e deram à equipa um presente: um bolo. Devidamente cortado com um colherim e com a primeira fatia para o goluso da equipa.

Today we had the third visit of young people from Reguengos de Monsaraz to the excavations at Perdigões (it was the 4th Open day). Globally, we were visited by around 100 children. It was the day of the younger ones. And they made and gave to the team a present: a cake. Precisely cut with a trowel and with the first cut for the sweet tooth of the team. 

Já quanto às estruturas negativas: mais buracos de poste. E a pegada do grande coelhinho mágico dos Perdigões (como diria o Tiago).

Regarding the negative structures: more post holes. And the footprint of the magical little bunny of Perdigões (as Tiago would have put it).

0284 - Post holes and ditches / Buracos de poste e valas

Aqui está mais uma concentração de materiais como as que têm vindo a ser identificadas. Esta cobre as duas valas paralelas pertencentes a uma fase mais antiga desta sequência de estruturas. Estas estão agora mais visíveis e, pelo interior, parece começar a surgir uma nova sequência de buracos de poste com a mesma curvatura. Cada vez mais complexo.

Here is another concentration of materials like the ones previously identified. This one covers the two parallel ditches that belong to the earlier phase of this sequence of structures. They are now more visible and, by the inside, a new row of post holes, with the same curvature, is starting to appear. More complex every day.

E a equipa do Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear chegou e começou a amostar depósitos para análises B-OSL no âmbito da colaboração com o Projecto Perdigões.

And the team from the Nuclear and Technological Institute arrived and started the sampling of deposits for B-OSL analysis in the context of the collaboration with the Perdigões project. 

0283 - Perto do fim / Near the end

A campanha aproxima-se do fim. Na Fossa 80 / Hipogeu 2 chegámos à base. A coluna central tem cerca de 80 cm de altura. A base era coberta por um espesso nível de argila e sobre este, junto à parede, uma concentração de cerâmicas fragmentadas, alguma fauna e uma mancha do que parece ocre amarelo. A fossa tem 2,60m de profundidade.

The campaign is close to the end. In Pt 80 / Hipogeum 2 we reached the base. The central column has 80cm high. The base was covered by a thick layer of clay, over which there was a concentration of pottery, faunal remains and  yellow ocher near the wall. The pit is 2,60m deep.

Cá fora começou a definir-se a continuação da estrutura circular já anteriormente detectada na base da Fossa 40 (a dos cremados). Pelo seu interior uma grande concentração de materiais (sempre o mesmo: fragmentos cerâmicos, fauna e pequenas pedras).

Outside we started to define the circular structure already identified in the bottom of Pit 40 (the cremated remains pit). Inside there is a significant concentration of materials (always the same: pottery sherds, faunal remains and small stones).

0282 - Monumentality / Monumentalidade

A estrutura em frente à fossa dos cremados começa a revelar uma biografia complexa. Há pelo menos dois momentos construtivos. Um primeiro corte do geológico (delimitado a azul) associado a uma vala de implantação de postes no seu interior; um segundo corte (a vermelho), com a mesma curvarura, mas mais amplo, relacionado com os grandes buracos de poste e pequena vala intermédia de implantação de postes mais pequenos. A reformulação de uma mesma estrutura central em madeira, com técnica de infraestruturas ligeiramente diferente.

The structure in front of the pit with the cremations is revealing a complex biography. There are, at least, two moments of construction. A first cut in the geologic (delimited in blue) associated to a ditch to support posts; a second cut (in red), with the same curvature, but larger, related to the big post holes and the intermediate small ditch for smaller posts. It is the reorganization of the same general wood structure in the center, with a slightly different infrastructure solution.

And the apparent facade of the second moment, with two big post holes and two smaller ones, being the middle aligned with the center of Pit 40 and aligned at 90º (East / Equinoxes).  

0281 - Dia Aberto / Open Day

Hoje foi o Dia Aberto. Mais de 60 pessoas visitaram os Perdigões. As escavações em curso, o museu na Torre do Esporão e o depósito de materiais aqueológicos, onde os visitantes têm sempre a possibilidade de ver e tocar nas peças mais de perto. Seguido de uma palestra sobre os resultados de um projecto de investigação e de um almoço "Neolítico".

Today was Open Day. Over 60 people visited Perdigões. The excavations, the museum of Torre do Esporão and the deposit of archaeological materials, where the visitors always have the opportunity of touch  the items. Followed by a talk about the results of a scientific research and a "Neolithic" lunch.
