Como já anteriormente mencionado, este ano também tem sido para o metal. Acontece que devemos estar a escavar uma zona com uma estrutura pétrea relacionada com a metalurgia do cobre. Como é habitual, a estrutura está a entrar para o corte e teremos de alargar. Mas nesta área têm aparecido inúmeros restos da cadinhos usados (alguns ainda estão in situ) e ainda mais vestígios de restos de cobre, Trata-se de uma estrutura que se sobrepõe às infraestruturas do Timber Circle e datará da fase de ocupação campaniforme desta área central dos Perdigões. Não longe das deposições de cremações (talvez uns 15 metros), emerge uma proximidade espacial entre duas práticas em que o fogo é personagem central em processos de transformação (transsubstanciação), o que introduz um outra proximidade para além da espacial. Uma ideia que já sublinhei, e voltarei a fazê-lo em breve, procurando ultrapassar a forma estanque com que tradicionalmente se abordam "diferentes" actividades e práticas na Pré-História.
As previously mentioned, this year has also been for metal. It turns out that we must be excavating an area with a stone structure related to copper metallurgy. As usual, the structure is coming into the section and we will have to widen it. But in this area there have been numerous remains of used crucibles (some are still in situ) and even more traces of copper remains. It is a structure that overlaps the Timber Circle infrastructure and dates back to the beaker occupation phase of this central area of Perdigões. Not far from the cremation depositions (perhaps 15 meters away), a spatial proximity emerges between two practices in which fire is a central character in processes of transformation (transubstantiation), which introduces another proximity beyond the spatial one. An idea that I have already underlined, and I will come back to do so shortly, seeking to overcome the watertight way in which "different" activities and practices in Prehistory are traditionally approached.
É o que se pode dizer do Círculo de Madeira dos Perdigões, agora que o quadrante Sudeste começa a ser exposto. Uma parte que se temia ter sido destruída pela surriba de 1996, mas que se preservou (à tangente). Boas notícias, pois.
This is what can be said about the Timber Circle of Perdigões, now that the Southeast quadrant is beginning to be exposed. A part that was feared to have been destroyed by the 1996 deep ploughing, but which was preserved (at a tangent). Good news then.
O registo da categoria de metalurgia do cobre (minério, restos de fundição, cadinhos, artefactos) na área central dos Perdigões atingiu o número redondo de 500. A sua distribuição na sequência estratigráfica que se desenvolve sobre na zona do Timber Circle é evidente, concentrando-se nos depósitos e estruturas associados ao campaniforme. A intensa actividade metalúrgica num local de forte carga simbólica, como é este centro dos Perdigões, diz bem da carga transcendental que essa mesma actividade envolveria.
The registration of the copper metallurgy category (ore, foundry remains, crucibles, artefacts) in the central area of Perdigões reached the round number of 500. Its distribution in the stratigraphic sequence that develops over the Timber Circle area is evident, concentrating in the deposits and structures associated with the Bell Beaker. The intense metallurgical activity in a place of strong symbolism, such as this center of Perdigões, speaks well of the transcendental character that this same activity would involve.
Já havia sido percebido nas últimas camapanhas, mas os resultados que estamos a obter nesta parecem confimar que temos, não um, mas dois Timber Circle na área central dos Perdigões. Descentrados e com o segundo a cortar as estruturas do primeiro. Mais uma evidência da complexidade da sequência construtiva e monumental desta área dos Perdigões.
It had already been noticed in the last campaigns, but the results we are getting in this one seem to confirm that we have, not one, but two Timber Circles in the central area of Perdigões. Off-centered and with the second cutting the structures of the first. Another evidence of the complexity of the constructive and monumental sequence of this area of Perdigões.
A fragmentação intencional de recipientes cerâmicos está registada em grande parte da vigência cronológica do sítio. Seja na cuidada segmentação em metades, seja na sua fragmentação através de pedras deixadas cair sobre os recipientes. Exemplos desta última situação encontra-mo-los desde o Neolítico Final ao Calcolítico com Campaniforme. The intentional fragmentation of ceramic vessels is recorded for most of the chronological life of the site. Whether in the careful segmentation into halves, or in its fragmentation through stones dropped on the containers. Chegados ao geológico na área central e lá começa a aparecer o mar de buracos de poste e de valas. Já na outra área de intervenção as pontas de seta e os campaniformes imperam.

Estão a ocorrer a um ritmo interessante e maioritariamente em depósitos do topo da sequência estratigráfica da área central dos Perdigões.
They are occurring at an interesting rate and mostly in deposits at the top of the stratigraphic sequence in the central area of Perdigões.

Profiles that tell us about the end of Perdigões
Escavamos de manhã e à tarde tratamos do material. Tem de ser, porque é sempre muito. Em três dias, e apenas no que à cerâmica respeita, foram recolhidos (numa área de cerca de 30m2) 2678 fragmentos, pesando um pouco mais de 55Kg. A que se juntam 59 fragmentos de pesos de tear, indústria lítica variada (com destaque para as pontas de seta), fragmentos de vaso em pedra (mármore?) e de um ídolo de cornos. Estamos nos contextos mais tardios dos Perdigões. E se muita coisa muda nessa fase, a quantidade de material não é seguramente uma delas.
We dig in the morning and in the afternoon we deal with the material. It has to be, because it's always a lot. In three days, and only regarding ceramics, 2678 fragments were collected (in an area of about 30m2), weighing a little more than 55Kg. To which are added 59 fragments of loom weights, a varied lithic industry (especially arrowheads), fragments of a stone vase (marble?) and an "ídolo de cornos". We are in the later contexts of Perdigões. And if there was a lot changes at this stage, the amount of material is certainly not one of them.

A fase final dos Perdigões, já no início da Idade do Bronze (últimos dois séculos do 3º milénio a.C.) está a ser caracterizada pela presença de vários contextos em que se observam fenómenos de encerramento por petrificação. Seja em fossos, no topo de sequências de ocupação ou, como neste caso, no encerramento de uma fossa onde se depositaram restos faunísticos, possivelmente resultantes de situações de comensalidade em contexto de práticas ritualizadas. Na campanha deste ano estaremos, em parte, a trabalhar uma situação que
se integra nesta mesma dinâmica final de vida dos Perdigões.
The final
phase of the Perdigões, at the beginning of the Bronze Age (last two centuries
of the 3rd millennium BC) is being characterized by the presence of several
contexts in which phenomena of closure by petrification are observed. Whether
in ditches, at the top of occupation sequences or, as in this case, at the end
of a pit where faunal remains were deposited, possibly resulting from
commensality situations in the context of ritualized practices. This specific
context is published in a volume dedicated to depositions and fragmentation
practices in Prehistory (which brings together presentations from a workshop
held by ERA with the supporter of the AAP, which can be obtained here:
In this year's campaign, we will be working on a situation that is part of this same end-of-life dynamic of the Perdigões.
Concluímos as contagens dos fragmentos cerâmicos recolhidos
nas campanhas de 2019 e 2020 na área central dos Perdigões (marcadas pelos
rectângulos azuis na imagem). No total a área coberta é de cerca de 74m2 com
uma profundidade média de 0,5m (o que dá cerca de 37m3).
Os fragmentos cerâmicos recolhidos totalizam, apenas nesta
área e nestas duas campanhas, 57.724, com um peso de 858 Kg. (quase uma
tonelada). A densidade por meio metro cúbico é de 780 fragmentos. Uma densidade
absolutamente brutal (e estamos a falar só de fragmentos cerâmicos, porque os
restos faunísticos não se lhes ficam muito atrás).
Tudo isto dá uma pequena noção da intensidade de ocupação
deste espaço, entre a construção do timber circle e o cairn pétreo que o cobre
parcialmente.
We concluded the counting of ceramic fragments collected in the 2019 and 2020 campaigns in the central area of Perdigões (marked by the blue rectangles in the image). In total covered area is about 74m2 with an average depth of 0.5m (which gives about 37m3).
The ceramic
fragments collected, only in this area and in these two campaigns, total 57.724,
with a weight of 858 Kg. (almost a ton). The density per half cubic meter is
780 fragments. An absolutely brutal density (and we are only talking about
ceramic fragments, because the faunal remains are not far behind).
All this
gives a small idea of the intensity of occupation of this space, between the
construction of the timber circle and the stone cairn that partially covers it.
No início de nova campanha, há quatro dias que andamos num alargamento da área escavada no centro dos Perdigões. Muito material já recolhido, mas, mais importante, foram apanhados os limites Sul e Este da grande mancha central correspondente ao cairn pétreo que culmina a ocupação neste ponto do sítio. Já dá para ver, mesmo sem estar limpo.
At the beginning of the new campaign, for four days we have been expanding the excavated area in the centre of Perdigões. Much material has already been collected, but, more importantly, the southern and eastern limits of the large central spot corresponding to the stone cairn that culminates the occupation at this point of the site were defined. You can see it, even without being clean.
