0009 - Day 12

Here is the Neolithic ditch, with an interesting sequence of natural thin deposits. Above them there were deposits with lots of stones and archaeological material. But deposits with a lot of pottery and faunal remains started to appear again. These deposits present always an inclination from E to W, from the outside to the inside of the enclosure. This is another interesting case study for the problems of ditch inside sedimentation.

Here, in the Chalcolithic area, we can see the deposit of accumulation of fragmented human burned bones, over a stone structure. From this deposit, mixed with the human bones, several arrow heads, and ivory idols were collected.

Again in the Neolithic side, the semicircular small ditch connected to the large one opens to West, connecting to a underground structure (hypogeum type?).

And the team (two members missing) of the first two weeks.

0008 - Day 10

I know. I promised other things, but idols keep making the days. Today a new head and a complete one. A classic. All in ivory.
Sim, prometi outras coisas.

0007 - Day 9

More objects (and more idols). In the next days we will present structures and stratigraphies.

006 - Day 6 (Idols day)

Two in limestone, well known in Portugal. One in ivory. Familiar in south Spain, but the first in Portugal. A West extension of a particular iconic figurine.

0004 - Day 3

The heat is starting to be a problem. So we finally built our tent.
O calor começou a apertar e finalmente montámos a nossa tenda.

We continued to define the ploughing tracks. Even so, some interesting materials start to appear from the zone of the burned bones (chalcolithic) but also from the area of the Neolithic structures.

In this last area, the small semi circular trench is been also defined. It looks like it comes out of the Neolithic ditch and makes a curve, coming back to the same ditch. It’s a strange structure, not yet completely understood.

0003 - Day 2

In the second day we defined the base of the ploughing. In the area of the funerary structure, lots of small fragments of burned human bones keep appearing.

0002 - Day 1

Naturally, the first day was dedicated to cleaning the space of last year intervention (inside and outside the survey area). We also enlarge it, using a machine to remove part of the upper sediments that were ploughed in 1996 (to a depth of 90 cm). As usually, lots of material was collected and in the area of the expected funerary structure those upper deposits had a lot of fragments of human burned bones.

The Spanish team from Madrid Complutense University that is collaborating in enclosures archaeoastronomic project involving also Perdigões was there too, starting to record data for the research on the orientation of the architecture of the enclosures.

0001 - Day 0

Excavations of the NIA-ERA projects of 2011 will start next Monday. We will be continuing the excavations in the Sector Q, in the centre of the set of enclosures.
As escavações do projectos NIA-ERA começam na próxima Segunda-Feira. Vamos continuar a intervenção no Sector Q, no centro do complex de recintos.

There, we are surveying the inner ditch (of Late Neolithic chronology), and several Chalcolithic contexts that partially cut the Neolithic structure. Among them there are some funerary structures that will be one of our mail goals.

The campaign is financed by Esporão S.A. (the owner of the farm) and by FCT (Portuguese Science and Technological Foundation), a project that brings together the ERA Arqueologia, de Department of Anthropology of the Coimbra University, and one of the research teams on archaeometry of the ITN (Nuclear and Tecnhological Institute). Later on, the team from Malaga University will start their work in Sector L, where they are developing their project.
