024/2013 - The pipe after cleaning

023/2013 – The pipe (?)

Just like another collected two years ago in Late Neolithic ditch 6 (still unpublished), an object that can be interpreted as a pipe was recorded almost at the bottom of Late Neolithic ditch 8.

It looks like a deep spoon, but the small handle is hollow.

022/2013 – The “avenue” of pottery shards

The filling of Late Neolithic ditch 8 was made by the depositions of a sequence of layers of fragments of pottery and faunal remains. This is an image of the top one.

One interesting thing is that, in a highly fragmented pattern, rims and fragment walls are in similar percentages. That is not a natural pattern, since we should expect much more wall parts. It is human deliberate intervention that builds that pattern. Something to add to the practice of horizontal depositions along the ditch.

021/2013 – Cutting and re-cutting

The confirmation that ditch 7, so far of chalcolithic chronology, cuts ditch 8. The limits of ditch 7, marked by the stones, are cutting in a curve the layers of elongated deposition of pottery shards that characterize the filling of the Late Neolithic ditch 8. One of the stones is a mini standing stone.

Inside ditch 7 is also confirmed the existence of what seems to be a re-cutting of a small ditch in the previous filling sediments. This re-cut was then filled with stones, some pottery and faunal remains.

This is something that has already been documented in Bela Vista 5 enclosure (see here: http://portugueseenclosures.blogspot.pt/2012/09/0111-re-excavating-ditches.html)

019/2013 – The big pot

In the last day of work of the first two weeks a big pot came out from the “hypogeum” structure.

018/2013 – 121

Is the number of the minimum individuals present so far in the cremations of pit 40. The bones are all quite burned and fragmented, so we use to count the individuals the petrous pyramid. This is the one from individual 118.

017/2013 – More…

Another small limestone idol was found in the cremations pit. From this general context we have now more than ten.

At the “hipogyum” half pots keep appearing near the walls. We just found two precise half parts, one from last here and the other from this here, that mach. They were two meters apart.

Is it still possible to think that the half parts of pots were broken like that just bi accident? Breaking in two precise half parts is not easy.

015/2013 – Parts and wholes…

… “Fragmentation in Prehistoric context” is the name of the book of John Chapman and Bisserka Gaydarska that I have in front of me, in the table. Pretty much adequate to deal with the peripheral depositions along the walls of the “Hipogeum” structure at Perdigões. There we have a sequence of stones, faunal remains and fragments (frequently half) of pots. These depositions started to be excavated last here and it is now continuing in the northern part of the structure.

010/2013 – The strange support vessel

We call it “support vessels”: hyperbolic shapes open in both sides, used to support other pots. The strange thing in this one, collected inside de late Neolithic “hypogeum”, is that has a suspension nipple inside. To what purpose would this artifact be suspended for?

009/2013 – “The pottery way”

That is what an elongated deposition of pottery shards (and some fauna) looks like in the top filling of Late Neolithic ditch 8 (just like ditch 12).

008/2003 – Where we are excavating

We are now excavating in several fronts and structures. In Sector Q we are excavating Chalcolithic pit 40, de one with the cremated human remains, and just started to excavate pit 35. We are also continuing the “hypogeum” from Late Neolithic.

007/2013 – Back to the cremations

After cleaning we start excavating in this afternoon. One of the contexts we came back was pit 40, a context with human cremated remains. Just starting, but already with some findings.

005/2013 – Cleaning

We are cleaning after a small amplification of the area of the “hypogeum” structure. And we have already a new circular pit and other negative structures cutting each other.

003/2013 - A different beginning

Perdigões 2013 campaign is beginning. This year we started in a different way, with an updating briefing for the History professors of the Oficinas de São José school about the main recent revolutionary discoveries of Recent Prehistory in Alentejo.

Here we are, speaking about the developments of knowledge resulting from Alqueva project amongst others (from that outstanding balcony of Monsaraz), and, after a visit to Perdigões, in the Perdigões museum at Torre do Esporão and latter in a session in the Enoturismo of that same company.

It is an interesting new way of starting a campaign.
